The first word most people use to describe Rüdiger is ‘solid.’ He looks like could be a good emergency wall if needed, and he’d probably make a half-decent patch for a breach in fortified concrete. He keeps his brown hair kept cut short in a buzzcut, and has blue eyes that can usually be described as ‘warm.’ At nearly two meters of height, he has a tendency to unintentionally loom over other people, but he’s affable enough that his presence rarely comes across as threatening.

A ‘century baby,’ Rüdiger was born just as the clock ticked over from AC 199. Officially the first child of the new century, his family took it as a sign of good luck. They needed it. Most of the extended Jaeger line perished during the destruction of L5A0206, and the survivors spent the next few years as destitute refugees, before being briefly resettled in the Sanc kingdom, then relocated to one of the new L5 colonies in AC 198. Rüdiger’s birth was taken as a sign to join in the colonial diaspora, and much of the remaining Eisen clan joined the second wave of colonists to Atropos in 203. His father and grandfather both became highly involved in planetary politics and issues of colonial rights, and were killed in the aborted rebellion of 207.

In 216, the remnants of his family relocated again, joining the initial colonization fleet journeying to Imbruim. They were with the convoy segment carrying the heavy equipment, advanced electronics, and raw materials required for the colony’s secondary expansion phase. For reasons never adequately explained, despite its value, the ships were only lightly escorted, and fell victim to a pirate ambush. The attack was so sudden and brutal that only a few escape pods were launched before the ships were overrun, and most of these were subsequently hunted down and destroyed. The few that survived did so only because they become intermixed with the debris of the escorts, and then of the convoy ships, scuttled once they’d been stripped of everything of value, with all passengers and crew still on board. Rüdiger came through the incident as the sole surviving member of his family.

He spent the next two years in state care, enlisting with the Jovian Planetary Peacekeeping Force upon finishing his primary education, pursuing secondary technical education while in the service. A spotless record with commendations for reliability and bravery under adverse conditions earned him an invitation to join the Preventers, where he continued to serve with distinction. He came to the attention of the Black Lions after an incident where his MS detachment was lured into a pirate ambush, the entire command cadre killed or incapacitated in the opening exchange. Taking refuge in the shattered hulk of their escort carrier, although heavily outnumbered and outgunned, the surviving suits managed to stymie’s the pirate’s planetary approach for one hundred and seven hours until reinforcements could arrive. The final six hours of which, through marksmanship, misdirection, and sheer tenacity Rüdiger alone kept the pirates from overrunning their position. His service record was passed on to the Black Lion brass for assessment, and a few months after the incident, he found himself presented with an enticingly worded opportunity for reassignment to the planet Yggdrasil.

Rüdiger’s personality is easy going, patient, and fairly laid back. He is slow to anger, having long ago learned that while his size and strength might ensure the likelihood of him being a victor in a physical confrontation, it also made it much too easy to go too far. His solution to problems is to meet them head on, and overwhelm them through sheer persistence and implacability, like a river eventually overcoming a dam.

Although he could never admit it, even to himself, in a few, small ways, Rüdiger is glad that his family is gone. As the favored son, and the family’s lucky charm, he received a lot of attention growing up, although it often came in forms he found inscrutable, or even frightening. As a child, he never understood why the timing of his birth was seen as so portentous, nor understood how as misfortune and tragedy winnowed his family’s numbers, it became more and more vital for them to seek reassurance from their particular talisman of hope. His mother was particularly over-protective, growing to the point of smothering after the rebellion on Atropos claimed both her father and her husband.

His relationship with his father was a bit more relaxed. Jaeger Eisen was an idealist at heart, a man with big dreams and the will to work hard to achieve them, a trait that he shared with his father-in-law along with the tendency to suffer from ideological tunnel vision. It was at their urgings that the family relocated from the rebuilt L5 cluster to Atropos, embracing the ‘pioneer spirit’ of bringing a whole, new world under the domain of man. He took up game hunting as a past time, a hobby that Rüdiger quickly came to enjoy as well (indeed, another reason why Rüdiger is excited about his transfer to Yggdrasil is the chance to try himself against the planet’s mega-fauna; a test of planning, intellect, and raw skill with stakes of real significance).
The time for leisure activities began to wane though, as Jaeger and his father-in-law-became deeply embroiled in the colonial rights movement. They embraced the view that the colonials were the brave, selfless caretakers of humanity’s future, and those that dwelled in the inner systems were hidebound, decadent, and all to eager to reap the fruits of the colonists labors for themselves. Even as a child, Rüdiger felt that they embraced a reckless, unrealistic idealism, ignoring that it was the massive investment of resources, materials, and manpower devoted by the core worlds that allowed the colonies to be founded in the first place (although it would not be until he was much older that he would be able to articulate his feelings so precisely). If he has one bitterness hidden away deep within his soul, it is that his father, and those like him died a stupid, pointless death, fighting an enemy that would not have existed had they recognized the ingratitude, the error of their chosen course. He has a notably short tolerance for privateers, pirates, or rebels who use such narrow-mindedness as justification for committing violence.

He rarely went hunting after his father’s death, only going out when he needed solitude and escape from his family, and to keep his skills in shape, he took up competitive shooting, one of the few things from his old life he was able to continue for the short time he spent in the care of the state. During this time, he also underwent voluntary psychiatric counseling, and was determined to be surprisingly well adjusted, considering the trauma he’d been through. He initially joined the JPPF because he was unsure of what to do with his life, and aptitude testing suggested that he’d be amenable to a career in the armed forces. He found that the structure of military life appealed to him, as well as the sense of accomplishment that came from keeping space and those who traveled it safe. His skill with ranged weapons often found him assigned to fire support and surveillance roles, and on occasion he was employed as the gunner on a Vayeate/ Mercurius team, earning him the admiring nickname “Rain of Fire” from his wingmates (shortened to Rof, which he felt sounded much less silly).

He is an excellent marksman, qualified with both small arms, and mobile suit weaponry. Reaction profiles however, show a 757% decrease in firing efficiency when the presented target has an unobscured human profile (i.e. Eye Contact Hesitancy) making him highly suited for anti-material targets, but inadvisable to employ in classic ‘sniper’ roles

He is quite adept with his hands, possessing excellent manual dexterity, and a natural affinity for machines. Although he might be able to build a computer from spare parts, he is semi-hopeless in actually using them.

He is not yet sure what to make of his promotion to the Black Lions. He realizes the importance the position possesses, but much of the information about the unit and its operations is need to know, and until he’s set foot on Yggdrasil, he doesn’t need to know.
